Esther Margaret Funk, age 81, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Golden Door Geriatric Centre, Winnipeg, MB. We are relieved that her pain has ended.
Esther was born on October 23, 1944, to Henry & Margaret Hiebert, in Carrot River, Saskatchewan. She was the second child after Bob; following her came Carol, Norman and Ken.
In 1962, Esther met Philip, and they married on August 14, 1965. Esther worked at St. Boniface Sanatorium.
Esther and Phil welcomed Gordon in 1966, then Bailey in 1968. Esther stayed home to care for her family as they grew. Later she worked as a medical receptionist.
During those years with growing children, the family went on many camping holidays.
Esther served the church and its people in many capacities. Over the years, Esther relaxed by reading, painting, sewing, quilting, doing puzzles, taking walks, and playing backyard badminton. She especially loved spending time with her young grandsons.
During their retirement years, Phil and Esther spent a lot of time at the trailer in Pinawa, enjoying the outdoors and their neighbours.
Esther was predeceased by her parents, Henry & Margaret, mother-in-law and father-in-law Henrietta & John, and two brothers-in-law, George & Dick.
She is survived by her husband, Philip; children Gordon & Bailey (Lyndon); grandsons Todd, Alex & Nik (Kirstin); siblings Ken (Heather), Carol (Larry), Norman (Sandy), Bob (Olga); sister-in-law Edna; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Sage Creek Cemetery, 884 Symington Rd, Springfield, MB. Reception to follow at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
The family gratefully thanks the staff at Golden Door Geriatric Centre, and Victoria Hospital 5th Floor South.
